PRO: ASCAP (Thomas Cleary)
Tom Cleary studied music with a concentration in jazz performance at Hampshire College where his teachers included Yusef Lateef and Archie Shepp, and music education and piano performance at the University of Vermont. He has been featured on recordings with artists including wife, singer/songwriter and pianist Amber deLaurentis (Hey Sadie), trombonist Rick Davies (Salsa Nortena), saxophonist Brian McCarthy (eponymous debut album) - all available on iTunes - and bassist Mike Gordon of Phish, with whom he played in a band between 2008 and 2014 that has been documented extensively on livephish.com. As an accompanist, he has worked with artists including Judi Silvano, Bill Frisell, Ike Willis and Lester Bowie. He has been commissioned as a composer by the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts for a song cycle based on poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins, vocal group Social Band, and the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble for whom he recently composed music based on the poetry of Ellen Bryant Voigt. His work as a musical director has included many productions at Saint Michaelʼs Playhouse over the past fourteen years. He teaches on the faculty of the Flynn Arts jazz program and the UVM Music Departments’ Jazz Studies Program. He also writes a blog on music--the Key Bop Chronicles.
